The cornerstone of 21st century skill development is authentic collaboration around relevant and meaningful tasks to create a product or outcome that is of value to others.
If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.
Centennial School District recognizes that the creation of new knowledge through technology is integral not only in how today’s students learn, but also in preparing students for the careers of tomorrow. For K-12 education to keep pace with the rapid technological advances in our society, we must develop new approaches to education that leverage emerging technologies, support collaborative learning, bridge the physical/digital realms, and prepare all students for the dynamic world they are entering.
Design and Technology
The 21st Century Learning Lab functions as a dynamic learning space for use across all curricular areas K-12. It is a fluid environment, configurable for a variety of challenge based learning experiences that are supported by technologies unavailable in regular classrooms. This includes multiple interactive projector surfaces for group collaboration, laptop carts, robust wireless internet access, and a planetarium dome for large scale sharing, presentation, and evaluation of student generated content.
The facility will support an instructional shift from learners being information consumers or spectators to being information users and knowledge creators. In all activities students will be challenged to ask "what is our goal, what is my role, what am I contributing, and how can I make my thinking visible"?
Leveraging videoconferencing, the dome, and collaborative technologies, the 21st Century Learning Lab will also support “In-District” field trips ranging from virtual expeditions (the Smithsonian or a National Park) to challenge based simulations
The lab will also serve as a robust venue for professional development, as staff engage in the same collaborative project based work that would be reflected in their pedagogy.
As a community resource the 21st Century learning lab will enable greater participation in district hosted events, from interactive shows to community forums.
